Best Shampoos Ever

The last blog discussed the worst conditioners, as rated by consumers, on the market for hair extensions. Well, today I wanted to discuss the best and most moistening shampoos available. These are listed in an order presented by consumers across three major product review websites. I combined the top results to create this list.
Niki Motz, Owner of Pelo Hair Los Angeles

1. BioSilk Volumizing Therapy. This shampoo is a paraben and sufate free formula, perfect for dyed extensions and virgin hair. It also contains UV blockers to protect the hair from fading or losing its luster.

2. Dove Cool Moisture. This shampoo is infused with cucumber, green tea, and Dove's patented Micromoisture Serum to nourish hair, replenish lost moisture, and leave hair soft without weighing it down under heavy moisturizers. I love it because it truly softens hair extensions that may have been over worn or over heated.

3. Redken Clear Moisture. This shampoo leaves all hair clean, light, airy, smooth, and shiny. Some products claim to moisturize hair, when essentially they put a lot of wax on hair to make it look healthy. This product doesn’t do this, leaving it looking clean and light day in and day out.

Conditioner – What You Shouldn’t Be Using

While our real hair extensions are made from the finest hair, the extensions have been removed from their host source. You want to use good conditioner when washing your Pelo Hair Los Angeles hair extensions. This said, there are some rather harsh conditioners available on the market that you need to stay clear of. These conditioners are listed below:

1. Herbal Essences Tousle Me Softly Conditioner, $3.99. This product tends to dull out hair and not shine it up. Plus, it creates knots, not “tousles”.

2. Nexxus Keraphix Restorative Strengthening Conditioner, $18.99. This is a mid-level conditioner, just under twenty dollars. This conditioner is a good reason why price point doesn’t matter. It promises to repair and soften hair. It doesn’t. In fact, it makes hair more brittle but this only shows the next day. There seems to be a flaw in the formula according to many of our clients.

3. Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk Conditioner, $6.99. Many people like this brand because it smells good and it is organic. However, for hair extensions, it isn’t ideal. It has a sticky feel to it, which leaves hair easily died out. There hasn’t been anything good on the internet composed about this conditioner.

Have questions about what products you should be using? Feel free to call us at the store or reach out on Twitter.

3 Ways Your Damaging Your Hair Extensions

I was recently asked if it is possible to ruin human hair extensions. I was puzzled. Why would it NOT be possible was the first thing I thought to myself. Human hair is human hair. The person who asked me the question explained the hair was “dead” because it was removed from the host and already killed so damage couldn’t happen. Well, this isn’t true at all. You can always remove hair that has been removed from the host.

Ways to ruin your hair extensions:

1. Cheap brushes. First, brushing hair extensions should be minimal. Don’t apply the 100 strokes rule every night. Second, cheap brushes can knot hair or tear it. If you buy gold standard hair extensions then spend the extra money for a quality brush.

2. Perms. Sure, they are on their way back into style but they can damage hair in a big way. If you want curly hair, buy naturally curly hair extensions or a wig. Perms have to be redone every four to six months and it is a heavy process. Avoid the damage by using hot rollers, a curling iron or buying already curly hair.

3. Too much shampoo. You do not need to wash hair extensions every day or every other day. You should only wash your hair extensions when dirty or every other week. Even once a week is better than once a day. Too much washing of hair (extensions or not) will dry out and damage your mane.

Secrets to Colored Hair

We sell virgin hair extensions and colored hair extensions. Since our hair is 100% real and ethically-sourced hair, you do have to care for it the same as you would your own hair. This is especially true when you purchase colored hair extensions from us here at Pelo Hair Los Angeles.

Here are 5 tips to keep your colored hair extensions looking bright and shiny.

1. Use mild shampoo. We sell products for this or you can buy baby shampoo. You don’t want to use too much shampoo, a harsh shampoo or shampoo the hair more than needed. Each shampoo will break up the dye pigments and make the hair lose its luster quicker.

2. Condition the bottom of the hair extensions first as they are the driest part of the hair. We suggest using a moisture-rich conditioner and combing it through the ends of the extension first, leaving it on for three minutes, and then conditioning the balance of the hair together.

3. Use cold water. Warm water is a mistake as it breaks up the dye pigments. Cold water will not only help keep hair color looking salon ready, but it also helps you keep your hair's health and shine.

Still have questions about buying dyed hair extensions or taking care of them? Please contact us! My team of experts can help you match-order specific products and shades based on your needs.

Asymmetrical Parts

We here at Pelo Hair Los Angeles love to help our clients decipher what trends will stay around for a while and which ones will be a flash in the pan. Lately, it seems asymmetrical parts are making a comeback and we don’t anticipate this trend dying down anytime soon.

Why asymmetrical part? Well, it works for any shape face and fixes imperfections – well, it gives the appearance of a correction. Whether the asymmetry is in your nose, eyes or lips, a deep or off-center side part can instantly bring harmony to any imbalanced facial feature.

Adding soft, wispy bangs to an asymmetrical part is a great way to correct face symmetry or hairline problems, especially with eyes that may appear too close together or too far apart. The worst thing you can do for eyes that are too close or too far away is to cut a blunt bang and part your hair down the center.

Below are some photos of great asymmetrical parts, which can be achieved with any of our Pelo Hair Los Angeles products.

Summer of the Bob

2014’s Summer Season will be the season of the Bob. Now, you can always add in some Pelo Hair Los Angeles Extensions after summer, when Fall 2014 is going to be the season of waist length straight hair, but if you want to know what the trend for 2014 is – keep reading.

The 2014 Bob trend will feature three main styles of the Bob. The first is going to be the chin length sleek bob. This means lots of hair gel and super straight hair with no volume. Personally, this style isn’t for me but fashion is what it is.

The other Bob style will be the shoulder length Bob with a heavy bang. To achieve this look, you will have to blow-dry your hair to obtain a lot of volume or add in our extensions, which have to be cut, to get more volume. Yes, this summer’s Bobs will be extreme. Either you have a lot of volume or you have none. There will be no in-between.

Finally, the third Bob trend for summer 2014 will be red hair. Yes, deep and dark red hair will be the major trend for June, July or August 2014. So, be prepared to wash out the hombre blonde hair and trade it in for really garnet toned hair if you are going with the trends.

Now, these trends are just what they say they are- trends. If you don’t like a Bob haircut or red hair, don’t go this route. Originality with style is always in style.

Are Extensions Bad for Your Hair?

There is a myth running around the beauty world that hair extensions, real or fake, are bad for your natural hair and scalp. Well, this is wrong. Hair extensions will only damage your natural hair and scalp if they are applied wrong or not taken care of. Like any cosmetic procedure, upkeep is crucial and how the application process proceeds is even more important.

If you buy hair extensions with my company, Pelo Hair Los Angeles, or any other company- the key is to have a professional apply the extensions. According to Allure.com, “Professionals should have undergone training; this is not something you want to have done at your local nail salon. And you should go back to your stylist for maintenance at least once a month. The stylist will make sure that the extensions are on properly, and if one is pulling at the hair, they'll remove it and reapply it the proper way. They can also rotate the areas that they put the hair extensions on so it's not the same group of hairs under stress every time. Rotating means less damage to the hair follicles. “

Clip-in hair extensions also don’t pull as much as other extensions. If you have a super sensitive scalp, or prior damage, then this may be a good option. Again, no one type of extension is better than the other re: damage. In fact, damage is very minimal when hair extensions are applied correctly and well cared for.

How to Ruin Hair Extensions

Even with quality products, it is possible to ruin your hair extensions if you don't take special care of them.

We put together some tips to ensure you are keeping your extensions in great condition. If you don't follow the steps below, you could possibly ruin your extensions!

Here are some specific tips to help you care for your extensions:

Human hair extensions can be treated as real hair, but do so more gently.

Use a special brush (often a loop brush) made just for extensions, so you don't damage the new hair or the bond. And make sure to brush but not often.

A gentle shampoo is recommended, and use cool water to help minimize tangles. We sell special shampoo at the store and online but a gentle drugstore shampoo also works.

A light conditioner will help reduce tangling and keep your new hair supple. Don't over condition the hair or it will look greasy, like any hair would.

Sleep with your hair in a ponytail or braid to avoid bed-head and knots. Again, you don't want to over brush the hair.

If you party in your hair, sleep in your hair without keeping it tied together, or you spent hours brushing it- the hair will become damaged- as would your own hair- and your extensions could even be ruined.

Do You Need A New Hairstyle?

We here at Pelo Hair Los Angeles take pride in selling the BEST and most ethically-sourced hair extensions. In fact, we have celebrity fans and our products are sold in Beverly Hills, California. Speaking of celebrities, we want to talk about the celebrity short hair trend right now. The ‘Miley’ Cyrus haircut seems to be hotter than ever. So, what happens when it is time to move on to something else? Do you deal with the grow out of the hair style or do you add extensions.

There is no right or wrong answer but hair extensions can be added to make your hair shoulder length, not just super long. Here are a few popular shoulder length hair trends for 2014:

First is the shag cut with bangs.

Because there are so many layers associated with this haircut, it is the perfect style to add in length and grow out the ‘Miley’. You can add chunky bang extensions, or simply grow out your own bangs comfortably with this look.

This chunky bob allows enough layers to add in hair extensions without an obvious statement.

You can gradually grow your hair out with this look, which also adds a younger appearance to any style.

Finally, there is the gradual A-line bob.

You may not be able to do an A-line when you start to grow out your hair. However, extensions only in the front can give way for the illusion of a true A-line bob.

2014 Summer Hair Color Trends

Pelo Hair Los Angeles offers amazing dyed products in addition to our virgin hair extensions. We have dyed Brazilian hair, dyed Malaysian hair, and tape hair offered in a variety of colors. Since the summer of 2014 is creeping up, and since it will be the year of multi-colored hair, I’ve decided to provide a few hair trend tips below! –Niki Motz, owner of Pelo Hair Los Angeles

Multi-Toned hair will be BIG

In the days of past, hair was either all one color (even if it was pink) or two-toned. Well, summer of 2014 is going to be the year of multi-toned. Mixed blondes and browns in various shades is the new thing. You can achieve this look by adding multiple tape hair products to your own locks. Or you can add one type of extension on top of your already two-toned dyed hair. The choices are endless. Here is a link to our tape hair extensions: http://www.pelo-hair.com/#!undetectable-tape-hair/c6mb

Gold Leaf hair is also going to be popular. What is Gold Leaf hair?

Think multi-colored hair meets a subtle ombre trend meets super curl! Yes, shades of dark blonde, light brown mixed together with big time curls and a lot of volume. This trend is HUGE in London right now and making its way to the USA in the Summer of 2014. For this look we recommend our Brazilian dyed hair. Curly Indian Virgin Hair Extensions

Many of you have questions about our curly Indian Virgin Hair extensions. Well, the details and photos are listed on the Pelo Hair website. However, I wanted to talk a little more about why this product is so popular. So, I figured today's blog post would be a great way to accomplish this. http://www.pelo-hair.com/#!curly-indian-hair-/c1duj

Curly Indian Hair comes from the temples in India. The hair we source is of the highest quality and is in its virgin state. Curly Indian Hair has a texture from silky wave to tight curls. The natural color varies from light brown to black. We have it available in color 1b, which is a muted black. My company sell's hair by the ounce and by the bundle. Bundles contain aprox. 3.5 ounces of hair.

Indian hair and curly Indian hair is popular because of its texture. I have women of all ethnic backgrounds buy this hair, but it is more popular within the African American community. The curly version of this hair is natural and ethically-sourced, which means the curl texture can’t be promised. Sometimes the hair comes in with a loose curl and other times with a very tight curl. If you are seeking a specific texture simply call me. I can seek out hair of this type to meet your specific texture needs.

Love layered hair?

Layered, feathered hair hasn’t gone away. Many women love the texture and fullness these types of hairstyles provide versus straight, drab long hair. One of the many benefits associated with this hairstyle is the ability to add in and take out hair extensions.

Weft hair extensions can make layered hair with extensions look sleek and smooth, not choppy or obvious. In fact, the layer blending wefts are sealed together with glue for a seamless finish. They also have two clips on either side to attach to your hair.

Using a hot iron to help blend your weft hair extensions creates a smooth, straight line. Even better, if you angle the weft extensions when you apply them to your scalp / hair, they will look as if your layers are gone or blend naturally into one another.

New website coming this week

Our new website is almost here and we can’t wait. I wanted to improve our shopping experience and make the website more socially acceptable. That’s why I decided to keep our logo and branding but incorporate a new look.

Now, when you buy hair extensions from Pelo Hair Los Angeles, you can order the color, the length and the quantity in a single click, not multiple clicks like before. You can also share your purchase on Pinterest or Twitter!

We are still offering the same great, ethically-sourced hair extension products. You can always call us and talk to one of our team members before ordering the hair extensions to make sure you are purchasing the best products for your specific look. This doesn’t change.

Additionally, I decided to offer monthly specials, which means you can check back with the new website each and every month to see what is on sale and what is new.

Products We Recommend!

We received a question asking what are our top three selling products. Well, we don’t ever believe you should select a product simply because it sells well. You should pick a product that matches our hair’s texture, color and ethnicity when possible. However, to honor this question, we are listing our top three selling products below.

1. Curly Indian Hair: Curly Indian Hair comes from the temples in India. The hair we source is of the highest quality and is in its virgin state. Curly Indian Hair has a texture from silky wave to tight curls. The natural color varies from light brown to black. The signature of Indian hair is its natural flowing appearance and the ends that tend to be wispy and uneven. Indian hair can be worn naturally or flat ironed. This hair is offered in: Machine Weft, I-tips, Skin Weft, and closures.

2. Brazilian Hair: Brazilian hair varies from silky and straight to wavy and more texturized. The natural color of the Brazilian hair ranges from a light brown color to an off black. The hair is thicker on the ends and has a beautiful natural shine. This hair can be curled or flat ironed. Brazilian hair is offered in: Machine Weft, I-tips, Skin Weft, and closures.

3. EuroAsian Hair: EuroAsian hair is thicker than Indian hair. It is an exotic blend of Asian hair and European hair and has a super-luxurious feel. This product is a straight hair with a very slight bend at the ends. The hair has a texture that is silky, but not too glossy. EuroAsian hair is currently only sold by the bundles. This is our only bundle product with aprox. 6 total ounces of hair.

Hair Extentions 101 ; Ordering Online

Since the 2014 Academy Awards are almost here. There are two sub – categories of hair extensions; synthetic and human hair. Synthetic here does not look real and is never used by celebrities. It also does not last long. Unlike synthetic hair, human hair is often used by celebrities, flash a long time, and looks completely natural. Some people have questions about the ethics surrounding sourcing human hair extensions. We here at Pelo Hair Los Angeles only used ethically – sourced hair.

There are different kinds of extensions, different types of hair, different formats as to how the hair extensions are added to your own hair. Weaves, heat fusing, clamping with metal rods, and I – tips are some of the most popular methods.

You have to find the right texture and color in a hair extension product order for your hair to look its best to be able to seal the fact that you are wearing hair extensions. Luckily, our website offers and upload photo option that allows customers to upload not only a photo of themselves, but a photo of a celebrity or other picture with the look they are trying to achieve. Once you do this, our team of qualified beauty consultants – not salespeople – will call or email you back with different product suggestions and pricing. Ordering hair on our website is not a complicated process.

You can also submit your hair extension questions below and I will personally respond to each and every one of them.

The 2014 Oscars are almost here!

On March 2nd, our country will celebrate some our finest acting talent. There are a lot of great nominations out there. But, what we here at Pelo Hair are most excited about, are the upcoming hair styles. We had so much fun participating in the 2013 Emmy Gifting Suite for GPK that we can’t wait to watch the Academy Awards this year.

Here are our top 3 hair trend predictions for Oscar Hairstyles this year;

1. Old Hollywood Waves in looser fashion. Long hair is making a comeback. While everyone did the chop thing (Jennifer Lawrence, Miley Cyrus, etc.) , hair extensions are being placed in heads across the Hollywood Hills these next two weeks to bring back old glamour with a modern twist.

2. Black is Back. Yes, just like the short hair styles noted above, blonde is almost over and everyone will be moving in a much darker direction. Black is going to be the new blonde. We might not see it at this year’s Oscars- but look for it in the next two months.

3. Side swept bangs. Harsh bangs will not be coming back anytime soon. In fact, bangs may be on their way out again. While in transition, the side swept bang is going to be big.

In case you haven’t noticed, we have a new buying experience on our website, www.Pelo-Hair.com. Simply pick your color and then review the products suggested.

EuroAsian Hair Bundles

We have an exciting new product to introduce to you. It is called EuroAsian hair and we sell it by the bundle. With ends thicker than Indian hair, this luxurious hair extension product is only available in natural colors. It is an exotic blend of high-end European and Asian hair. We love because it lasts long and looks beautiful. Our clients love it because it is super luxurious and sold as bundled hair.

Bundles sell from 16 inches long to 30 inches long and pricing starts at $239.99 per bundle. You have the opportunity to experience this hair almost before anyone else in the country, as it hasn’t become a trend yet and is only available to exclusive pillars within the hair community.
